VMFA-121 carries one of the most storied records in Marine Corps aviation. Activated on 24 June 1941, the Green Knights flew F4F Wildcats and F4U Corsairs as charter members of the Cactus Air Force during the Battle of Guadalcanal, and the squadron went on to compile a combat history spanning Vietnam, Desert Storm, and multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The modern chapter began on 20 November 2012, when the squadron was officially redesignated VMFA-121 and accepted delivery of the first three F-35B aircraft, making it the first operational F-35 squadron in any branch of the United States military. In January 2017, the Green Knights departed MCAS Yuma, Arizona, and arrived at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, becoming the first permanently forward-deployed F-35B squadron in the Marine Corps. Operating under Marine Aircraft Group 12 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the squadron flies the F-35B Lightning II short takeoff and vertical landing variant, supporting Pacific deterrence through stealth-enabled strike missions, expeditionary operations from amphibious ships, and joint training with allied air forces across the Indo-Pacific region.
