VMA-231 Ace of Spades — the Marine Corps' oldest flying squadron, rocking a Las Vegas detachment patch that's as bold as the unit's 100+ year legacy. When your insignia is literally the first in Marine aviation, you play every hand to win.
VMA-231, the "Ace of Spades," is the oldest squadron in Marine Corps aviation, tracing its origins to February 8, 1919, in Miami, Florida — a unit that emerged from the Northern Bombing Group of World War I France. The squadron's iconic Ace of Spades insignia, designed by 2nd Lieutenant Hayne D. Boyden, was the first official unit insignia in Marine Corps aviation history. During Desert Storm, VMA-231 flew an unprecedented 18,000 nautical miles around the world in 14 days to reach the theater, then flew 987 combat sorties and delivered 1,692,000 pounds of ordnance against Iraqi targets. Based at MCAS Cherry Point under MAG-14 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, the Ace of Spades flew the AV-8B Harrier II until completing its final flight in May 2025, now transitioning to the F-35B Lightning II.
