This VMA-231 "Ace of Spades" Last Call patch commemorates the squadron's final chapter with the AV-8B Harrier II, marking the end of an era for one of the Marine Corps' most distinguished attack squadrons. Based at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, VMA-231 was part of Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14) under 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, and this patch honors their farewell to the iconic STOVL attack jet.
VMA-231 was known as "First and Finest" and carried the Ace of Spades as their squadron symbol — the death card that American troops have used as a psychological weapon since the Vietnam War. The AV-8B Harrier gave VMA-231 the unique ability to operate from austere forward bases, roads, and amphibious assault ships, providing close air support to Marines without dependence on traditional airfields. The "Last Call" designation marks the final operational flights of the Harrier with VMA-231, a bittersweet milestone that closes the book on a beloved aircraft and opens a new chapter as the Marine Corps transitions to the F-35B Lightning II.
