VAQ-144 Main Battery Operation Rough Rider Red Sea 2024-2025 Shoulder Patch — Embroidered Patch
Electronic Warfare in the Red Sea
When the Houthis threatened international shipping lanes and regional stability, VAQ-144 was on the tip of the spear — jamming, suppressing, and destroying enemy air defenses from the cockpit of the EA-18G Growler. This deployment patch marks the Main Battery's combat operations during Operation Rough Rider in the Red Sea, 2024-2025.
VAQ-144 "Main Battery" is one of the Navy's newest electronic attack squadrons, established on October 1, 2021, to fill a critical gap in carrier air wing electronic warfare capability. Flying as part of Carrier Air Wing One aboard USS Harry S. Truman, the squadron deployed to the CENTCOM area of operations in late 2024, conducting combat operations against Houthi and Iranian-proxy military targets in Yemen. VAQ-144's EA-18G Growlers flew strike missions carrying anti-radiation missiles to destroy enemy radar systems, while providing electronic jamming support that protected coalition aircraft. The deployment marked the squadron's first combat operations and validated the Navy's decision to stand up the 15th operational VAQ squadron.
