This leather patch represents the Landing Signal Officers (LSOs) assigned to Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific (CNAP/AIRPAC). LSOs are the highly trained naval aviators who stand on the carrier's LSO platform and guide aircraft to safe arrested landings on the flight deck. Every carrier landing in the Pacific Fleet passes through the experienced eyes and steady hands of AIRPAC's LSOs.
The LSO is one of the most critical roles in carrier aviation. Standing on the exposed LSO platform at the stern of the carrier, often in challenging weather and sea states, LSOs evaluate each approaching aircraft's lineup, glideslope, angle of attack, and rate of descent, providing real-time corrections via radio and the Optical Landing System. In extremis, the LSO has the authority to wave off an aircraft — a potentially life-saving decision made in fractions of a second. LSOs grade every carrier landing, and their assessments drive aviator training and qualification.
