The TACAMO Weapons School grew out of the Weapons Tactics Detachment under Commander, Strategic Communications Wing One, and was elevated to a full independent command to reflect the critical weight of its training mission. The school supports the two operational E-6B Mercury squadrons, VQ-3 Ironmen and VQ-4 Shadows, along with the fleet replacement pipeline of VQ-7 Roughnecks, all based at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma. The E-6B Mercury carries a dual mission as both a communications relay platform and an airborne strategic command post, providing survivable nuclear command, control, and communications for the president, the secretary of defense, and U.S. Strategic Command. That mission traces back to the early 1960s, when the Navy first determined that an airborne very low frequency communications system could keep the deterrent triad connected even under the most severe wartime conditions. The Weapons School exists to ensure that every crew flying that mission meets the highest standard of tactical proficiency, communications discipline, and strategic awareness before they ever take the aircraft airborne on alert. This embroidered patch marks that school, that standard, and the quiet community behind one of the most consequential airborne missions in the American nuclear deterrence structure.
