MALS-39 Hellhounds Hound Pup PVC Patch

Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing

Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), the "Hellhounds," traces its combat origins to 16 April 1968 when Provisional Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 39 was activated at Marine Quang Tri Airfield in the Republic of Vietnam. Assigned to Provisional Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39) of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the squadron's mission was to provide critical logistical support for tactical squadrons and elements at Quang Tri, Dong Ha, and the besieged firebase at Khe Sanh during some of the most intense fighting of the Vietnam War.

After deactivation on 25 October 1969, Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 39 was reactivated at Camp Pendleton, California on 1 September 1978, providing support for the UH-1 "Huey," AH-1 "Cobra," and OV-10 "Bronco" aircraft. The squadron was redesignated Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39) on 1 October 1988 under the Marine Aviation Logistics Support Package concept, consolidating aviation supply, maintenance, and ordnance functions under a single commanding officer. Today, MALS-39 provides aviation logistics support for approximately 182 aircraft assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 39, covering nine flying squadrons from MCAS Camp Pendleton.

MALS-39 Marines have deployed worldwide in support of major operations including Operation Desert Storm and the liberation of Kuwait, Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom—deploying in January 2003 aboard the SS Curtiss (T-AVB-4) aviation logistics support ship and ashore at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait. The squadron earned the 1998 Secretary of Defense Maintenance Award and the 2003 Marine Corps Aviation Association Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron of the Year Award. MALS-39 Marines continually deploy to the Western Pacific supporting unit deployments to Okinawa and Marine Expeditionary Units afloat.

Perfect For: MALS-39 Hellhounds members and veterans, MAG-39 personnel, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing logistics specialists, Marine aviation maintenance professionals, Camp Pendleton aviation community members, and supporters of Marine Corps logistics excellence.

A proud symbol of the logisticians who keep Marine Corps attack and utility helicopters mission-ready, from the battlefields of Vietnam to the expeditionary bases of the 21st century.
