USS America (LHA-6) is the lead ship of the America-class amphibious assault ships, commissioned on 11 October 2014 in San Francisco. At 844 feet long, America is designed as an aviation-centric platform optimized for the F-35B Lightning II, MV-22B Osprey, CH-53K King Stallion, and the full range of Marine rotary-wing aircraft. The ship carries over 1,600 Marines and serves as the centerpiece of an Amphibious Ready Group, projecting Marine Air-Ground Task Force power from the sea. America has deployed extensively across the Indo-Pacific, participating in exercises from Talisman Sabre to bilateral operations with allied navies across the region.
