Official HT-8 Keep Calm and Ball On Shoulder Patch — Helicopter Training Squadron 8 Embroidered Patch

Keep Calm and Ball On—HT-8 Eightballers, where student helicopter pilots learn to call the ball and earn their wings at NAS Whiting Field.

Helicopter Training Squadron 8 (HT-8), the "Eightballers," is a United States Navy advanced helicopter training squadron based at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Florida, operating the TH-73A Thrasher training helicopter. HT-8 conducts advanced helicopter flight training for student naval aviators who have been selected for the rotary-wing pipeline, teaching the demanding skills of helicopter operations that will prepare them for fleet aircraft including the MH-60R/S Seahawk, MH-53E Sea Dragon, and CMV-22B Osprey.

The "Keep Calm and Ball On" message is a clever aviation twist on the classic British wartime phrase, referencing the "ball call"—the communication between a pilot and the Landing Signal Officer during an approach to a ship's flight deck. When a pilot acquires the Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System (the "meatball"), they radio "[callsign], ball," indicating they have the visual glideslope reference for landing. For student helicopter pilots at HT-8, learning to "call the ball" and maintain a stable approach to a pitching flight deck during shipboard landing qualifications is one of the most challenging milestones in the training pipeline.

HT-8 is part of Training Air Wing Five (TW-5) under the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA), which oversees the entire naval aviation training pipeline. NAS Whiting Field has served as the home of Navy and Marine Corps helicopter pilot training for decades, with its multiple outlying landing fields, instrument training routes, and proximity to overwater training areas in the Gulf of Mexico providing an ideal environment for rotary-wing flight training. The Eightballers' instructors are experienced fleet helicopter pilots who return to the training command to shape the next generation of rotary-wing aviators.

Perfect For: HT-8 Eightballers members and instructors, TH-73A Thrasher student pilots, NAS Whiting Field aviators, CNATRA helicopter training personnel, Training Air Wing Five members, and naval aviation morale patch collectors.

Keep Calm and Ball On—the Eightballers of HT-8, teaching student naval aviators to fly, hover, and land aboard ship one ball call at a time.
