HSM-48, the Vipers, is a Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron based at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, flying the MH-60R Seahawk in support of anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and search-and-rescue operations. Originally established as HSL-48 in 1989, the Vipers have deployed aboard destroyers and cruisers worldwide, hunting subs and protecting the fleet. This Det 2 morale patch puts a hilariously unhinged twist on the mission — because when you're operating off a destroyer in the middle of the ocean, you need a mascot that's equal parts terrifying and ridiculous.
