HMLA-169, the Vipers, fly AH-1Z Vipers and UH-1Y Venoms out of MCAS Camp Pendleton under MAG-39 and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Activated in 1971, the Vipers have one of the most extensive combat records in Marine light attack aviation — from Desert Storm (where they flew 234 combat sorties without losing a single aircraft) through the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the Battle of Fallujah in 2004, and multiple combat deployments to Afghanistan.
