Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) is the only permanently forward-deployed carrier air wing in the United States Navy, based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and embarked aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76). CVW-5 is the cornerstone of American airpower in the Indo-Pacific, maintaining constant readiness to respond to any threat or contingency across the vast Western Pacific theater.
CVW-5's Japan-based patches celebrate the unique identity of an air wing that lives and operates in the Western Pacific year-round. Unlike other carrier air wings that deploy from the United States for seven-to-nine month cruises, CVW-5 is always forward — conducting exercises with Japanese, Korean, Australian, and other allied forces while maintaining the combat readiness to fight tonight if called upon. The air wing's component squadrons represent the full spectrum of carrier aviation capability: strike fighters, electronic attack, airborne early warning, helicopter sea combat, helicopter maritime strike, and fleet logistics support. CVW-5's presence in Japan is a tangible demonstration of the U.S. commitment to the defense of its Pacific allies.
