Official HMLA-367 Scarface "Hover Cover" mini name tag patch.
Scarface — first Marine Cobra squadron in Vietnam, hover cover for the team on the ground.
Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367), the legendary "Scarface," is a USMC AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom squadron based at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California under Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron was originally commissioned in December 1943, fought at Peleliu and Okinawa in World War II, and was deactivated in 1949. It was reactivated on August 1, 1966 as VMO-3 and arrived in Vietnam in December 1966, becoming fully operational at Hué/Phu Bai on January 16, 1967 flying the UH-1E Huey. The call sign "Scarface" was adopted in summer 1967 (replacing the original "Oakgate") thanks to lobbying by Major Bill Murphy, and in March 1968 VMO-3 was redesignated HML-367. The squadron flew throughout I Corps in support of Marine and Army units — Operations Medina, Fortress Ridge, Prairie Fire, Dewey Canyon, Apache Snow, Lam Son 719 — plus near-daily MACV-SOG cross-border reconnaissance missions into Laos. In December 1969 HML-367 became the first operational Cobra squadron in the Marine Corps with the AH-1G, and on April 24, 1970 became the first helicopter squadron in Vietnam to achieve 100% aircraft availability with all 25 birds "up" — finishing FY1970 with 22,378 flight hours. The squadron was temporarily deactivated at MCAS Kaneohe Bay in April 2022 under Force Design 2030, then reactivated on December 16, 2022 at Camp Pendleton, replacing HMLA-469 "Vengeance." "Hover Cover" is the Scarface mantra. This mini patch is the proof.
