Lafayette Escadrille Patch — WWI American Volunteer Fighter Squadron French Air Service Embroidered Patch
The Lafayette Escadrille — American volunteers who flew for France before the U.S. entered World War I.
The Lafayette Escadrille (Escadrille N.124) was a squadron of the French Air Service composed primarily of American volunteer pilots who flew combat missions during World War I before the United States entered the war in 1917. Named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette — the French hero of the American Revolution — the Escadrille was formed in April 1916 and flew Nieuport and SPAD fighters against German aircraft over the Western Front. The squadron's Sioux Indian head insignia became one of the most iconic emblems of WWI aviation. When the U.S. entered the war, most of the pilots transferred to the U.S. Army Air Service.
