While IWU does not host an on-campus NROTC unit, university students have historically commissioned via the cross-town University of Illinois NROTC consortium, the Officer Candidate School pipeline at Newport, and the Marine Corps' Platoon Leaders Class — the same pathway alumni in any small liberal-arts college tradition take into Naval and Marine aviation. The Naval Aviation pipeline starts at NAS Pensacola with the six-week Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API), runs through primary flight training in the T-6B Texan II at NAS Whiting Field, NAS Corpus Christi, or Vance AFB, and ends with the Strike (T-45C), Maritime, E-2/C-2, or Rotary advanced pipeline before fleet replacement squadron assignment.
