HMR-161 — the helicopter transport squadron that predated the modern medium helicopter community.
HMR-161 was a Marine helicopter transport squadron from the early era of Marine rotary-wing aviation, when the Marine Corps was pioneering the concept of vertical envelopment — using helicopters to bypass enemy defenses and deliver Marines directly into the fight. HMR-161 was among the first Marine helicopter squadrons to deploy to Korea, where the concept of helicopter-borne assault was tested in combat for the first time. The lessons learned by HMR-161 and its sister squadrons in Korea fundamentally changed how the Marine Corps fights.
