VMGR-153 Whilst We Joust With Hercules C-130 Refueling F-18 Patch
Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 153 (VMGR-153), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing
Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 153 (VMGR-153) traces its distinguished combat lineage to 1 March 1942, when Marine Utility Squadron 153 (VMJ-153) was commissioned at Camp Kearney, San Diego, California. Serving with the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command (SCAT) during World War II, the squadron delivered approximately 15 million pounds of supplies and equipment, evacuated more than 20,000 casualties, and transported over 8,000 personnel across the Pacific Theater, earning the Navy Unit Commendation for its exceptional wartime service.
The squadron's post-war history included critical evacuations from China in 1948-1949, Hurricane Hilda relief operations in Mexico in 1955, and Korean War logistics support before decommissioning on 20 May 1959. After more than six decades of dormancy, VMGR-153 was reactivated on 13 January 2023 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, as a KC-130J Super Hercules squadron assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 24 (MAG-24), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing—answering the Marine Corps' strategic need for expanded aerial refueling capacity in the Indo-Pacific region.
This patch depicts the KC-130J performing one of its most critical missions: mid-air refueling of an F/A-18 Hornet, extending the tactical reach and endurance of Marine tactical aviation. The KC-130J provides both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aerial refueling through its wing-mounted refueling pods, enabling receiver aircraft to conduct extended combat missions without dependence on ground-based fuel infrastructure. The phrase "Whilst We Joust" captures the daring precision required in aerial refueling—aircraft flying in close formation at hundreds of miles per hour to transfer thousands of pounds of fuel. VMGR-153 also provides assault air transport, close air support, and multi-sensor imagery reconnaissance from its Hawaiian base.
Perfect For: VMGR-153 squadron members, KC-130J Super Hercules aviation enthusiasts, Marine aerial refueling community professionals, MAG-24 personnel, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing service members, and military aviation collectors.
Where precision meets power—honoring the aerial refueling warriors who extend the reach of Marine Corps tactical aviation across the vast Pacific.
