The United States Army is the oldest and largest branch of the United States Armed Forces, established on 14 June 1775 by the Continental Congress when it authorized the formation of ten companies of riflemen to serve for one year in the American Revolutionary War. General George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief on 15 June 1775, and from those first Continental Army formations, the service has grown into the world's most capable ground combat force.

The Army's combat legacy spans nearly 250 years of continuous service across every major American conflict. During World War II, the Army grew to over 8.3 million soldiers organized into 89 divisions, fighting across the European and Pacific theaters from the beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944 to the occupation of Japan. In Korea, Army forces endured 37 months of combat from 1950 to 1953, suffering over 109,000 casualties. During the Vietnam War, the Army deployed over 1.7 million soldiers between 1965 and 1973. In Operation Desert Storm, the Army's VII Corps executed a sweeping left-hook maneuver that destroyed 26 Iraqi divisions in just 100 hours of ground combat beginning 24 February 1991.

Today, the United States Army maintains approximately 485,000 active-duty soldiers, 336,000 Army National Guard members, and 189,000 Army Reserve soldiers stationed across installations worldwide. From Fort Liberty to forward-deployed units in Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East, the Army continues to defend American interests on the ground. Its motto, "This We'll Defend," reflects an unbroken commitment to national defense since the founding of the Republic.
