Joint Task Force-Southern Border was established on March 14, 2025, when the 10th Mountain Division assumed command authority under U.S. Northern Command to lead the Department of Defense's full-scale southern border security mission. Since then, more than 20,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, Coast Guardsmen, and National Guardsmen have served under JTF-SB, executing agile, all-domain operations in direct support of U.S. Customs and Border Protection across nearly 2,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. The task force has overseen the largest barrier reinforcement effort in American history, deployed drones and counter-drone technology, and conducted tens of thousands of detection and monitoring missions alongside federal law enforcement partners. The Leviathan name chosen for this patch draws on one of the most enduring symbols of overwhelming, unstoppable force in military and cultural history — a creature described in ancient texts as armored, fire-breathing, and beyond the reach of any weapon. In a JTF-SB context, the name signals that the task force itself is the immovable presence standing against chaos at the border.
