VMF-451 was activated during World War II and served as a reserve fighter squadron based at NAS Atlanta, Georgia, under the Marine Air Reserve. The squadron saw action during the late stages of World War II and maintained readiness through the Cold War, transitioning through a remarkable progression of aircraft — from F4U Corsairs to FJ-2 and FJ-4 Furies, F-8 Crusaders, and eventually F-4 Phantoms. In 1956, VMF-451 became the first Marine squadron to receive the upgraded FJ-4 Fury. The squadron deployed to Atsugi, Japan, and later stood alert during the Taiwan Straits Crisis. The Blue Devils carried the fighting spirit through the transition to all-weather fighters, eventually becoming VMFA-451 "Warlords" — a lineage that continues today as VMFAT-501.
