Officially Licensed USMC VMFA-211 Wake Island Joint PVC Patches — They Earned the Name 'Avengers' the Hard Way

Two names. Two battles. Both written in blood and fire.

Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 (VMFA-211) — the 'Wake Island Avengers' and the 'Bastion Defenders' — carries two combat-forged nicknames that span from the opening hours of World War II to the Global War on Terror. Commissioned on January 1, 1937, at Naval Air Station San Diego, the squadron's early roster included future Medal of Honor recipients Henry Elrod, Robert Galer, and Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington. In November 1941, VMF-211 launched 12 F4F-3 Wildcats from USS Enterprise to Wake Island, arriving just days before the Japanese attack. On December 8, 1941, enemy bombers destroyed seven aircraft on the ground. With their remaining Wildcats, the Marines of VMF-211 fought back against overwhelming odds for 15 days, with Captain Henry Elrod becoming the first Marine aviator to earn the Medal of Honor in World War II. Wake Island fell on December 23rd, and the surviving Marines were taken prisoner. The squadron rebuilt, adopted the name 'Avengers' in honor of their fallen and captured brothers, and went on to fight across the Pacific in Corsairs through the end of the war. Decades later, VMA-211 flew A-4 Skyhawks through Vietnam, transitioned to AV-8B Harriers, and deployed repeatedly to Iraq and Afghanistan. In September 2012, at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, Taliban insurgents infiltrated the base and attacked the squadron's flight line, destroying six Harriers and killing the squadron commander, Lt. Col. Christopher Raible, and Sgt. Bradley Atwell. The Avengers earned their second title — 'Bastion Defenders.' In 2016, VMA-211 was redesignated VMFA-211, becoming one of the first fleet squadrons to fly the F-35B Lightning II. On September 27, 2018, VMFA-211 launched the first-ever F-35 combat strike from the deck of USS Essex. This PVC patch honors one of the most storied squadrons in Marine Corps aviation history.

Perfect For: VMFA-211 and VMA-211 veterans, Wake Island Avengers and Bastion Defenders, F-35B Lightning II and AV-8B Harrier community members, and anyone who respects a squadron that earned every letter of its name.
