This VMFA-311 "Tomcats" Avionics PVC shoulder patch identifies the avionics Marines within one of the Marine Corps' premier fighter attack squadrons. Based at MCAS Miramar, California, VMFA-311 has transitioned to the F-35C Lightning II, and the avionics technicians are responsible for maintaining the most sophisticated sensor and electronics systems on any fighter aircraft in the Marine Corps inventory.
VMFA-311's avionics Marines maintain the F-35C's advanced mission systems, including the AN/APG-81 AESA radar, the Distributed Aperture System (DAS), the Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS), and the integrated avionics suite that makes the Lightning II the most sensor-rich fighter ever built. The transition from the AV-8B Harrier to the F-35C represented a quantum leap in avionics complexity, and VMFA-311's avionics technicians had to master entirely new systems and maintenance procedures.
