Carrier Air Wing Nine, tactical callsign SHOGUN, is a United States Navy air wing homeported at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, and currently assigned to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). Established as Carrier Air Group Nine in 1952, CVW-9 has accumulated a combat record spanning Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and multiple Western Pacific and Middle East deployments. Operation Epic Fury, launched on February 28, 2026, in the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility, marked a major U.S. military campaign targeting the Iranian regime's security apparatus. Carrier air wings, including CVW-9 assets, operated south of the Strait of Hormuz in support of the campaign, executing strike, electronic attack, and airborne early warning missions across a demanding and contested operational environment. CVW-9 brought to that fight a multi-platform strike force built around F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, E-2D Hawkeyes, and MH-60 Seahawk detachments, the same integrated capability that logged over 11,600 flight hours and 5,500 sorties during the air wing's prior 2024 deployment.
