The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, originally formed at Camp Pendleton in 1979 and redesignated to its current title in 1988, is a forward-deployed sea-based Marine Air-Ground Task Force built around rapid crisis response and combined arms power projection. Its Aviation Combat Element fields roughly 417 personnel operating a composite reinforced squadron that includes MV-22 Ospreys, CH-53E Super Stallions, UH-1Y Venoms, and F-35B Lightning IIs, executing the six functions of Marine aviation across every deployment. Within that ACE, aviation ordnance Marines carry one of the most demanding and least-visible specialties in the element, managing every step of the weapons cycle from procurement and storage through buildup, delivery, aircraft loading, and post-mission downloading. They maintain guns, bomb racks, missile launchers, and ordnance support equipment so that pilots can execute offensive air support, anti-air warfare, and close air support on schedule and on target.
