Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue — "Bogue Rats"

Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field (MCALF) Bogue, also known as Bogue Field, is an 875-acre landing field located on Bogue Sound in Carteret County, North Carolina, serving as the Marine Corps' only East Coast site for Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP). The land was originally purchased by the United States Navy in 1942 for $97,600, and three 4,000-foot runways were constructed to support MCAS Cherry Point operations. During World War II, Bogue was used almost exclusively for VMSB dive-bomber squadron training, with VMSB-331 and the squadrons of Marine Aircraft Group 33 training on SBD Dauntless aircraft before deploying to the Pacific.

In May 1963, the Chief of Naval Operations designated Bogue Field as a Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field to supplement Cherry Point's aviation operations. Today, MCALF Bogue serves as the primary East Coast location for AV-8B Harrier and F-35B Lightning II practice operations, supporting approximately 3,500 Field Carrier Landing Practices per training year. The field features a painted outline of an LHA amphibious assault ship deck with realistic deck lighting and simulated superstructure, allowing pilots to practice carrier landings in conditions that replicate shipboard operations. Marines assigned to this remote outpost have proudly earned the nickname "Bogue Rats" — a badge of honor reflected in their unofficial logo. Maintained by Marine Wing Support Group 27 and used by the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Bogue Field's unique aluminum panel runway can be disassembled and reconstructed anywhere in the world in a matter of days, embodying the Marine Corps' expeditionary airfield philosophy.

Perfect For: Marines who have served at MCALF Bogue, Bogue Rats past and present, AV-8B Harrier and F-35B Lightning II pilots, MCAS Cherry Point personnel, MWSG-27 Marines, and 2nd MAW aviation community members.

This patch is a proud symbol of the Bogue Rats — the Marines who keep the Corps' East Coast aviators carrier-qualified and combat-ready from one of the most unique airfields in military aviation.
