Marine Air Support Squadron 2 (MASS-2) "Pacific Vagabonds" deployed to Australia for Exercise Black Dagger 2018, and this patch commemorates that deployment. Black Dagger is a bilateral training exercise between United States Marine Corps and Australian Defence Force units, focused on integrating Marine air support and command and control capabilities with allied ground and aviation forces in the challenging Australian terrain.
During Black Dagger 2018, MASS-2 operated the Direct Air Support Center (DASC), coordinating close air support and other aviation fires for Marine and Australian ground units training in realistic combat scenarios across the vast Australian training ranges. The exercise tested MASS-2's ability to deploy to an austere, remote location and immediately establish command and control of tactical aviation in support of a combined force. The Pacific Vagabonds' ability to project their DASC capability across the Pacific to Australia demonstrated the flexibility and expeditionary mindset that defines Marine air support operations.
This patch captures a specific deployment that tested the Vagabonds' ability to operate far from home in a combined, joint environment.
