The Korean War (1950–1953) was one of the most consequential and costly conflicts in American military history, yet it is often called "The Forgotten War" because it was overshadowed by World War II before it and the Vietnam War after it. On 25 June 1950, North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea, triggering a United Nations response led by the United States that would ultimately involve over 1.78 million American service members—of whom 36,574 were killed, 103,284 were wounded, and 7,747 remain missing in action.
The Korean War produced some of the most intense combat in modern military history. From the desperate defense of the Pusan Perimeter to General Douglas MacArthur's brilliant amphibious assault at Inchon, from the harrowing retreat from the Chosin Reservoir—where Marines and soldiers fought through overwhelming Chinese forces in temperatures reaching 35 degrees below zero—to the bloody stalemate along the Main Line of Resistance, Korean War veterans endured conditions as brutal as any faced by American forces in any conflict.
The armistice signed on 27 July 1953 ended active hostilities but never produced a formal peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula technically still at war to this day. The sacrifice of Korean War veterans preserved the Republic of South Korea as a free and democratic nation that has grown into one of the world's largest economies and a critical American ally in the Pacific.
