H-3 Sea King Patches — The Cold War Sub Hunter That Brought the Astronauts Home
From hunting Soviet submarines in the deep Atlantic to plucking Apollo astronauts out of the Pacific, the Sea King did it all.
The Sikorsky H-3 Sea King is one of the most iconic and versatile helicopters in American naval aviation history. Introduced in 1961, the SH-3 was a landmark design — the world's first amphibious helicopter and one of the first anti-submarine warfare rotorcraft powered by turboshaft engines. Born from a 1950s U.S. Navy requirement to counter the growing Soviet submarine threat, the Sea King combined the roles of hunter and killer into a single airframe, a capability that had previously required two separate helicopters working in tandem. Powered by twin General Electric T58 turboshaft engines turning a five-blade main rotor, the Sea King could carry up to four Mark 44 or Mark 46 homing torpedoes and was equipped with dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and magnetic anomaly detection gear. In 1962, a modified Sea King shattered the absolute helicopter speed record at 210.6 mph — the first rotorcraft to break the 200 mph barrier. But the Sea King's legacy extends far beyond submarine warfare. It served as the plane guard helicopter aboard aircraft carriers, standing ready to rescue aircrew during launch and recovery operations. It performed search-and-rescue, medevac, mine countermeasures, transport, and airborne early warning missions across the globe. Perhaps most famously, SH-3 Sea Kings recovered NASA astronauts from the ocean after Gemini and Apollo splashdowns — including the crew of Apollo 11 after the first moon landing. The Sea King also served as the basis for the presidential helicopter, Marine One, flown by the Marines of HMX-1. With over 1,100 units produced and operators in more than two dozen nations, the Sea King served the U.S. Navy for over four decades before being replaced by the SH-60 Seahawk in the 1990s. This patch is a tribute to the Plane Captains and maintainers who kept these legendary birds mission-ready through decades of Cold War service and beyond.
Perfect For: H-3 Sea King aircrew and maintainers, Plane Captains, HS squadron veterans, carrier-based ASW crews, Apollo recovery mission enthusiasts, and anyone who served with the King of the Sea.
