Distinguished Flying Cross Patch — Embroidered Patch
Heroism Above the Earth
The Distinguished Flying Cross recognizes heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight — the aviator's highest recognition short of the service crosses. This patch represents the pilots, aircrew, and aerial observers who demonstrated exceptional courage or skill in the air during combat or other aerial operations.
The Distinguished Flying Cross was established by an Act of Congress on July 2, 1926, and has been awarded to aviators from all branches of service for acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. Marine recipients include helicopter pilots who flew into hot landing zones under devastating fire to extract wounded Marines, fixed-wing pilots who pressed attacks against heavily defended targets, and aircrew who demonstrated extraordinary airmanship under the most demanding combat conditions. The DFC has been awarded in every conflict from World War I through the War on Terror, recognizing the unique courage required to operate in the aerial environment where a single mistake or enemy hit can be instantly fatal.
