CH-46 Phrog Endangered Species Patch — Embroidered Patch
The Last of the Phrogs
As the MV-22 Osprey replaced the CH-46 across the fleet, the Phrog became an endangered species — and its community wore that status with pride. This patch captures the twilight years of the Sea Knight, when every remaining Phrog squadron knew they were flying a piece of living history. The aircraft was aging, the numbers were shrinking, but the Phrog refused to go quietly.
The CH-46 Sea Knight served the Marine Corps for over five decades, but by the early 2000s, the writing was on the wall. VMM-263 became the first operational MV-22 Osprey squadron in 2006, and one by one, CH-46 squadrons transitioned to the tiltrotor. The remaining Phrog units flew their aging aircraft with the same pride and skill that had defined the community since Vietnam. Each final flight, each decommissioning ceremony, and each last deployment marked the passing of an era. The "Endangered Species" patch became a badge of honor for the crews who kept the Phrog flying until the very end, maintaining an aircraft that had outlived every prediction of its retirement date.
