The Sikorsky HO3S was one of the earliest helicopters used by the Marine Corps during the Korean War. The HO3S performed observation, utility, and medevac missions in the harsh Korean environment, proving the viability of rotary-wing aviation in combat. These early helicopters were primitive by modern standards — limited payload, minimal instruments, and no armor — but the Marines who flew them demonstrated that helicopters could be indispensable in warfare. The HO3S crews were true pioneers who proved the concept that would eventually lead to the massive Marine helicopter force of today.
