The Bronze Star Medal recognizes heroic or meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against an armed enemy — one of the most widely awarded combat decorations in the American military. When accompanied by the combat "V" device, it marks individual acts of valor in direct combat. This patch represents the service members whose performance under fire earned them one of the military's most respected awards.
The Bronze Star Medal was established by Executive Order 9419 on February 4, 1944, and has been awarded in every conflict since World War II. The medal can be awarded for either heroic achievement (with the "V" for valor device) or meritorious service in a combat zone. Marine Bronze Star recipients include squad leaders who led their teams through ambushes, officers who directed operations under fire, and enlisted Marines who demonstrated exceptional courage and initiative in combat. The Bronze Star is one of the most meaningful decorations a service member can receive, representing recognition by superiors that their performance in combat was truly outstanding.
