Boeing VERTOL Patch — Embroidered Patch
The Company That Built the Phrog
Behind every CH-46 Sea Knight that ever lifted a squad of Marines was Boeing Vertol — the company that designed, built, and supported the tandem-rotor helicopter that became the backbone of Marine medium-lift aviation for over four decades. This patch honors the engineers, workers, and support teams who gave the Marine Corps its most enduring helicopter.
Boeing Vertol, originally the Vertol Aircraft Corporation and later Boeing Helicopters, produced the CH-46 Sea Knight beginning in the early 1960s. The tandem-rotor design provided exceptional stability and lifting capability, making it ideal for the assault transport and casualty evacuation missions that defined Marine helicopter operations. The Phrog first entered Marine service in 1964 and saw its combat debut in Vietnam, where it gradually replaced the UH-34D as the primary medium-lift platform. Boeing Vertol continued to support and upgrade the CH-46 through decades of service that included operations in Vietnam, Beirut, Desert Storm, Somalia, and the early years of the War on Terror. The company's tandem-rotor expertise also produced the CH-47 Chinook for the Army, making Boeing Vertol synonymous with heavy and medium-lift rotary-wing aviation.
