Amphibious Squadron 3 (PHIBRON 3) is a United States Navy amphibious warfare command that provides the ships and seamanship expertise to transport and land Marines as part of an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). PHIBRON 3 works hand-in-hand with Marine Expeditionary Units to form the Navy-Marine Corps team that has been America's premier crisis response force since World War II.
PHIBRON 3 commands a group of amphibious warfare ships — typically an amphibious assault ship (LHD/LHA), an amphibious transport dock (LPD), and a dock landing ship (LSD) — that together can carry a full MEU of approximately 2,200 Marines with their aircraft, vehicles, and equipment. The squadron provides the ship-to-shore movement capability that defines amphibious warfare: landing craft, helicopters, and tiltrotor aircraft launch from the ARG's ships to put Marines ashore on hostile or austere beaches anywhere in the world. PHIBRON 3's sailors are the amphibious experts who navigate, launch, and recover the full spectrum of landing operations that make the Marine Corps' expeditionary mission possible.
