This patch represents the foundational achievement decoration for sailors and Marines, marking the beginning of a career built on excellence.
The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal was established on January 24, 1962, as a means to recognize junior service members for meritorious service or achievement that is noteworthy but doesn't rise to the level of the Commendation Medal. For enlisted Marines, the NAM is often the first tangible recognition that their hard work and dedication have been noticed by the chain of command. With the combat "V" device, it recognizes acts of combat valor, making it a meaningful decoration regardless of its position in the order of precedence. The NAM is awarded more frequently than higher decorations, but for the Marine who receives it, particularly early in their career, it represents a significant milestone.
