The Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal was originally established as the Navy Commendation Ribbon in 1944 and was upgraded to a medal in 1950. It recognizes meritorious service, heroic achievement, or meritorious achievement in a combat or non-combat situation. The medal with the combat "V" recognizes valor in direct contact with the enemy, while the non-combat version recognizes sustained superior performance in one's duties. The Commendation Medal is one of the most meaningful awards for junior and mid-grade Marines, representing the first level of personal recognition that carries significant weight in a service member's career.
