The Air Medal recognizes single acts of heroism or meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight — the foundational recognition for aircrew who perform with distinction in the air. This patch represents every aviator and aircrew member whose service in the sky earned them one of military aviation's most meaningful decorations.
The Air Medal was established by Executive Order 9158 on May 11, 1942, to recognize meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. For combat aircrew, the Air Medal is typically awarded for a specified number of combat missions or flight hours in a hostile environment, though it can also be awarded for individual acts of merit or heroism during flight. In Vietnam, the Air Medal became one of the most commonly awarded decorations for helicopter aircrew, recognizing the extraordinary danger of flying combat missions in a helicopter war. The strike/flight numeral system allows the medal to be awarded multiple times, and many combat aviators accumulated numerous awards during their tours. The Air Medal remains a cornerstone of aviation recognition.
