The Navy and Marine Corps Medal was established on August 7, 1942, to recognize acts of heroism that occur outside of combat with an enemy force. Recipients have saved drowning shipmates, rescued personnel from burning aircraft, performed extraordinary acts during natural disasters, and demonstrated heroism in countless other life-threatening situations. The medal ranks above the Bronze Star and just below the Silver Star in the order of precedence, reflecting the extraordinary nature of the acts it recognizes. Many recipients acted instinctively, running toward danger when every survival instinct told them to run the other way — the same courage that defines combat heroism, applied to saving lives rather than taking them.
