Afghanistan Campaign Patch — Embroidered Patch
Two Decades in the Graveyard of Empires
The Afghanistan Campaign Medal recognizes service in the longest war in American history — a conflict that spanned from October 2001 to August 2021 and tested every branch of the American military in ways no one anticipated on September 12th. This patch represents every service member who served in the Afghan theater.
The Afghanistan Campaign Medal was established by Executive Order 13363 on November 29, 2004, to recognize members of the United States Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and surrounding areas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and subsequent operations. The medal bears campaign stars for participation in designated phases of the conflict, from the initial response in 2001 through the surge operations of 2009-2012 and the transition and drawdown that followed. Over 800,000 Americans served in Afghanistan during the war, facing an enemy that was patient, adaptable, and intimately familiar with some of the most unforgiving terrain on earth.
