The A-4's Forever patch is a tribute to the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, one of the most beloved and successful attack aircraft in American military aviation history. Known affectionately as "Heinemann's Hot Rod" after its designer Ed Heinemann and "The Scooter" for its nimble handling, the A-4 served the Navy and Marine Corps with distinction from the 1950s through the 1990s and continues to fly in aggressor and training roles around the world.
The A-4 Skyhawk was a masterpiece of simplicity and effectiveness. Designed to be small, lightweight, and easy to maintain, the Skyhawk could carry a weapons load nearly equal to its own empty weight while remaining incredibly agile in the hands of a skilled pilot. The A-4 served in Vietnam, where it flew thousands of combat sorties in the attack and close air support roles, and later became the aircraft of choice for TOPGUN and adversary squadrons, simulating enemy fighters. For generations of Navy and Marine Corps pilots, the A-4 was the aircraft that shaped their skills and defined their love of flying. This patch declares that the Scooter will never be forgotten.
