A-4's Forever Patch — Embroidered Patch
The Mighty Scooter Lives On
Small, fast, and mean — the A-4 Skyhawk was the attack aircraft that punched well above its weight class for four decades. "A-4's Forever" is the rallying cry of the Scooter community, the pilots and maintainers who loved the lightweight attack jet that could carry more bombs per pound of airframe than anything else in the inventory.
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk — nicknamed "Heinemann's Hot Rod" after its designer Ed Heinemann — entered service in the mid-1950s and served the Marine Corps for over forty years. More than thirty Marine operational, reserve, and training squadrons flew the Scooter, which became the backbone of Marine light attack aviation during the Vietnam War. The A-4's small size, exceptional maneuverability, and ability to deliver ordnance accurately made it a favorite among Marine attack pilots. In Vietnam, A-4 squadrons flew thousands of close air support sorties, often operating from austere forward bases under combat conditions. The last Marine Skyhawks were retired in 1998, ending one of the longest and most distinguished service careers in Marine Corps aviation history. To those who flew her, the Scooter will never truly be retired.
Perfect For:
