Every combat aviation unit that flies missions has a rear echelon that makes those missions possible. This 1st MAW Rear Vietnam patch honors the Marines who served in the support and logistics elements of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing during the Vietnam War — the maintenance crews, supply personnel, communications specialists, and administrators who kept the wing operational from rear area positions.
The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing's operations in Vietnam required a massive support infrastructure that extended far beyond the flight line. Rear area personnel managed the logistics of keeping hundreds of aircraft flying daily combat missions, handling everything from spare parts procurement and aircraft overhaul to communications support and personnel administration. While they may not have flown the missions, these Marines were essential to every sortie that launched. The rear area was not always safe — rocket attacks, mortar fire, and ground probes targeted Marine installations throughout I Corps. The Marines of 1st MAW Rear served with the same dedication as their forward-deployed counterparts, knowing that without their work, nothing else would fly.
