The Goshawk is a heavily navalized derivative of the British BAE Systems Hawk, selected by the US Navy in November 1981 as the winner of the VTX-TS advanced trainer competition to replace the T-2 Buckeye and the TA-4J Skyhawk in the strike training pipeline. The first T-45A made its maiden flight on April 16, 1988, entered fleet service in January 1992, and was followed by the T-45C variant featuring the digital "Cockpit 21" glass-cockpit display suite. To meet US Navy carrier requirements, the airframe was significantly modified from the basic Hawk: strengthened airframe and landing gear for catapult launches and arrested-recovery loads, twin nose-wheels with catapult launch T-bar, nose-wheel steering, relocated speed brakes, an under-fuselage tailhook, and avionics compatible with front-line Navy combat aircraft. A total of 221 T-45 Goshawks were built between 1988 and 2009. Today the Goshawk is operated by VT-7 Eagles, VT-9 Tigers (formerly VT-19 Attack Frogs), VT-21 Redhawks, VT-22 Golden Eagles, and VT-86 Sabrehawks across NAS Meridian and NAS Kingsville, taking student naval aviators through the strike syllabus all the way to day and night carrier qualifications. The TA-4J was retired in 2003 and the T-2C in August 2008 — leaving the Goshawk as the sole strike trainer in the US Navy.

Perfect For: T-45 Goshawk pilots, instructor pilots, and student naval aviators, NAS Meridian and NAS Kingsville residents, Training Air Wings ONE and TWO personnel, CNATRA staff, T-2 Buckeye and TA-4J Skyhawk heritage instructors, naval aviation strike pipeline alumni, and McDonnell Douglas / BAE Systems aviation enthusiasts.

T-45 Goshawk — every strike pilot's first jet.
