The squadron was commissioned on August 2, 1971 at NAS Meridian when VT-9 \"Tigers\" branched off to form a sister squadron, after which both VT-9 and VT-19 split the intermediate jet training role at Meridian. VT-19's mission was to instruct future naval aviators in the foundational skills required of every strike-pipeline jet pilot — basic jet familiarization, radio instruments, precision aerobatics, formation flying, night flying, air-to-air gunnery, and ultimately carrier qualification — built around the McDonnell T-2 Buckeye trainer. VT-19 was originally assigned 57 aircraft including T-2As and T-2Bs (phased out by 1973), and eventually grew to 82 T-2C Buckeyes assigned to Training Air Wing ONE. In July 1987 the squadron consolidated with VT-9 \"Tigers,\" and on October 1, 1998 VT-19 was redesignated as VT-9 — reactivating the Tigers callsign and effectively retiring the Attack Frogs name from active fleet service. VT-9 \/ former VT-19 completed the last student naval aviator training flight in the T-2C Buckeye in June 2004 before transitioning to the T-45C Goshawk that VT-9 Tigers fly today.
