VT-35 was established on October 29, 1999 at NAS Corpus Christi, initially flying the Beechcraft TC-12B Huron — the militarized King Air 200 variant — to provide intermediate and advanced multi-engine training for student naval aviators selected for the maritime patrol, carrier turboprop, and tilt-rotor pipelines. After 18 years flying the TC-12B, on May 16, 2017 the squadron retired the Huron and transitioned to the Beechcraft T-44C Pegasus — the King Air 90-based twin-engine turboprop trainer that has been the Navy's primary multi-engine trainer since 1977. More recently and historically, on June 19, 2025 VT-35 became the first squadron in the United States Navy to begin flying the new Beechcraft T-54A Marlin II — the King Air 260-based Multi-Engine Training System (METS) replacement for the T-44C — placing the Stingrays at the leading edge of the Navy's largest training-aircraft modernization in nearly five decades. VT-35's graduates feed the P-8A Poseidon, E-2D Hawkeye, E-6 Mercury, C-130 Hercules, MV-22B Osprey, and CMV-22B Osprey communities.
