The squadron was activated in September 1951 at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina as Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron 262 (HMR-262), and during the Vietnam War deployed to South Vietnam in December 1966 — operating from multiple locations and participating in numerous named combat operations including Operation Desoto. The squadron also participated in Operation Powerpack in the Dominican Republic (April–June 1965), Lebanon contingency operations, and humanitarian assistance efforts in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan. HMM-262 was redesignated VMM-262 on August 30, 2013 (officially September 30, 2013), marking the squadron's transition from the CH-46E Sea Knight to the Bell Boeing MV-22B Osprey — an aircraft with twice the speed, almost three times the payload, and four times the range of the legacy Phrog. As the III MEF (REIN) ACE forward in Okinawa, VMM-262 routinely flies reinforced packages with detachments from across MAG-36 and supports 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments aboard the amphibious ready group built around USS America (LHA-6) and USS Tripoli (LHA-7), executing assault support, theater security cooperation, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and Indo-Pacific contingency response.
