MAG-39 was originally activated on April 16, 1968 at Quang Tri Combat Base in Vietnam under the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, was deactivated in October 1969, temporarily reactivated for Operation Frequent Wind (the 1975 Saigon evacuation), and permanently reactivated in September 1976 at Camp Pendleton under 3rd MAW command. The group has supported Operation Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope (Somalia), Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
