During the 2004 deployment to Al Anbar Province, Kilo Company squad leader Corporal Jason Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in the city of Karabilah, Iraq, making his sacrifice one of the defining moments in the battalion's modern history. Based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, 3\/7 remains an active light infantry battalion under the 7th Marine Regiment and 1st Marine Division, its mission unchanged since 1941: locate, close with, and destroy the enemy by fire and close combat.
